ALBUM OF THE YEAR CONTENDER: “NEVER ENOUGH” BY TURNSTILE

A genre-bending experience that will take you on a journey from heavy hardcore to tuneful anthems and back again.

At Jacaranda Records we can never get enough of the Baltimore based five-piece TURNSTILE. 2021’s GLOW ON has been a regular on the shop’s turntable for the past 4 years, and since we got to see them live at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse in 2023, we’ve been eagerly awaiting what their next project will be. Enter NEVER ENOUGH, their 4th studio album that doubles down on the experimental and polarising sound that catapulted them into popularity.

From the moment they hit the ground 15 years ago, their willingness to experiment and move forward has set them apart from the pack. Comprised of singer Brendan Yates, guitarists Meg Mills and Pat McCrory, bassist Franz Lyons, and drummer Daniel Fang, they bring the infectious energy that fans have to expect, but this album also see’s many contributors add flair (and again, experimentation) to the 14 track record. The horn flourishes on ‘Dreaming’ are performed by members of BADBADNOTGOOD, while the backing vocals on ‘Seein’ Stars’ are contributed by Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes and Paramore’s Hayley Williams. Elsewhere, these guests help songs shape-shift completely. Shabaka Hutchings’ flute solo in ‘Sunshower’ is unexpected and tranquil after Yates’ hardcore punk vocals this is where I wanna be, but I can’t feel a fucking thing.

What really draws us to TURNSTILE is that they aren’t seeking to provide any answers to life’s big questions, they’re here to spread TLC (Turnstile Love Connection) get you dancing. The album is a vibe, and one that you’re going to hear in the shop all summer long, and most likely far beyond (not sorry if you’re going to get sick of it).

At the time of this article, NEVER ENOUGH by Turnstile is available on Indies exclusive RED WAVE or PERIWINKLE vinyl at Jacaranda Liverpool and Jacaranda Baltic.
